Housing Assistance

How do I apply for assistance?
Applications can only be accepted when the waiting list is open. A community that is accepting applications will have one of the following two indicators in its listing:

Application(lilnk is not active, this is an example only)
or
Waiting List Application(link is not active, this is an example only)

If I get on the waiting list, how long do I have to wait?
The waiting list times varies depending on the program. Generally, waiting times can vary between several months and several years.

Do you provide emergency housing?
AHA does not provide emergency housing, however we do work in partnership with the Aurora Housing Corporation's Families in Transition Program (FIT). FIT offers a two-year transitional housing program with intensive case management to homeless families. They can be reached at 303-366-7951.

How does Section 8 work?
Families can apply when the waiting list is open. Once their name reaches the top of the list they will be contacted to determine if they meet the eligibility requirements of the program. If they are determined to be eligible, they will be issued a voucher which will allow them to rent a unit from a private landlord on the open rental market. Families pay approximately 30% of household income towards rent.

How much rent will I pay each month?
For purposes of calculating the amount of financial assistance to be provided to the family, the monthly tenant payment is generally 30% of the family's adjusted monthly income.

Using my Housing Choice Voucher, can I rent a property in Adams or Arapahoe County?
You can only use your Voucher within the City limits of Aurora. Parts of Aurora are in Adams County and parts are in Arapahoe County.

Can I rent from a family member? (use my voucher)
The owner (including a principal or other interested party) must certify that he/she is not the parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, sister or brother of any member of the Housing Choice Voucher client’s family, unless the PHA has determined (and has notified the owner and the family of such determination) that approving the rental of the unit, notwithstanding such relationship, would provide a reasonable accommodation for a family member who is a person with disabilities.

What is the definition of near-elderly?
A person 55 years of age.
